LSR shooter? Fancy giving Prone a try? "Ah, prone" you say. "People trussed up in some sort of bondage outfits - using what appears to be a meccano set with a barrel - to puncture targets with an entirely unneccesary number of aiming marks, very slowly and in a state of terminal boredom." Er, no. Not quite. To start with, yes, we do actually need that many aiming marks. One per bullet, in fact. Prone is as accurate as shooting gets and if we tried to put ten rounds through the same diagram we'd just end up with a ragged hole in the middle of the thing and the scorer beating his head on the desk in frustration. That's without a scope, of course. You don't get telescopic sights in Prone. They'd make it too easy. But, just to make it harder, sometimes we speed it up. Think skirmisher. Think a wild, pulse-hammering race to get as many rounds as possible into eight miniscule dots in the space of just one minute. Sometimes, we make it longer. Think 100 yards of sunlit grass at Wedgnock, wind flags fluttering in the frustratingly fickle breeze. Sometimes we share it. Think tea and buns at the back of another club's range, all eyes on the scorer as we wait to see who won. Boring, it isn't. While there are indeed rifles in existence with more adjustments than a meccano set (although, sadly, I've yet to see one with an attachment for making tea), this isn't actually compulsory and most are built along more conventional lines. Likewise, it isn't compulsory to have your jacket so tight you can't breathe, this being for most people not so much a conscious decision as the cumulative effect of years of post-shoot beer and scratchings. Tuesday nights at the Old Silhillians are Prone nights and very relaxed nights they are too. You won't find anyone shouting orders and it's rare to have to queue for a space on the firing-point. You can fire several details in a row without being made to feel you're stealing someone else's slot and when you've finished there'll be some gentle banter going on the clubroom. Free on a Tuesday night? Of course you are. Want to come and play with us? Of course you do. Click here for more. |
